Tools to Support Connected Learning: Chapter 5
I wish I knew sooner that learning not only implies getting myself out of my comfort zone, it also implies learning new ways to learn. When we think about obtaining knowledge or being educated, we immediately think of colleges, schools or third-party courses, but who knew that YouTube would be just as effective for Marketing?
The truth is, I have always used YouTube for other areas of my life, such as makeup tutorials, money saving tips or watching review videos on products I was interested in buying. I saw this platform as a way to learn within my personal life... and how the trend has changed for the betterment of my career.
Utilizing unconventional ways of learning
Last year, I found myself intrigued by the topic of implementing an Integrated Marketing Communications plan, one of the chapters in my "Advertising" class. It incorporated everything I had learned so far of marketing and making marketing plans, but how is it I never heard the term? And so... utilizing YouTube for my curiosity of possible careers in this area began. I had learned more in depth information on career paths and how I could grow as an individual and it led me to my now all time favorite channel dedicated to all things marketing, Leveling Up with Eric Siu. I started to become invested in the comments and learning from the people in the same industry as I was, I followed groups on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. Surely enough, as I prepare to graduate I have found the actual career path within marketing I want to pursue.
Chapter 5 showcased the different ways we can learn and tools to support these connected learning environments outside of a classroom. Never did I imagine, one of them would be a platform that was used to post the trendy "Harlem Shake Challenge".
The Connection between the reading and my implementation:
Ever since utilizing "unconventional" platforms and ways of learning I have seen the product of combining the different approaches to ensure mastery of a topic when in discussions or when implementing an effective alternative to what already exists. I have noticed a spike in my creativity when combining traditional and new ways of approaching a project or leading a team. Most importantly, I have developed the approach of "How can I combine this with what I already know? or "What new avenues can I explore to implement in hand with this new piece of information?". Overall, to anyone reading this blog I can reassure you of one thing.
Within this ever evolving world where technology facilitates transactions, flow of information and apps that are developed to help facilitate daily activities, education has also become accessible to all who are seeking to obtain knowledge. Though it is not the traditional classroom or workshop environment, the outcome is the same, or even better as the ability to look for platforms and content aligned with the topics of one's interests is easy to obtain.
Knowing this piece of information, How will you learn forward? Are you currently part of a social platform some people wouldn't use in the same way?
However or wherever you learn, know that the importance is not the delivery method, but the content itself!
Happy discovering!
